How to Coordinate Floors and Window Treatments

Floors and window treatments, two large and usually prominent features in nearly every room of your house; so how do you make sure your floors and window treatments harmonize? When styling your room, think of it like an outfit with the floors and window treatments being the shoes and belt respectively. Do the two need to match? No. Do they need to coordinate? Yes. So, when updating floors and window treatments or playing with the aesthetic of your home’s décor, consider how the cohesion of floors and window treatments can strengthen design.

Hunter Douglas Vignette® Modern Roman Shades paired with flooring from PSI Near Scottsdale, Arizona (AZ).

Color Continuity

One uniting element for floors and window treatments is color. This can either mean matching hues or being on the same tonal palette. Making the connection through color is most optimal when the flooring and window coverings are fabric based or of a textile nature as there are more color options to select from. Take for example using Hunter Douglas Vignette® Modern Roman Shades in carpeted rooms. With this pairing choose a hue from the floor as your base for color continuity, as it’s the larger element; since Vignette® Modern Roman Shades come in an incredible variety of shades and patterns, there will be no problem finding a suitable match.

Textural Harmony

Sometimes it’s the material that connects the floors and window treatments. In modern interior design we’ve seen the growing popularity of wood as a unifying element. Not only is the material warm and comforting, it’s also incredibly diverse and can add texture and dimension to design. For example, pairing hard wood floors with woven wooden shades like Hunter Douglas Alustra® Woven Textures®; both elements are wood yet have different textures and aesthetics. They work together in the space because they are rooted in the same material and so harmonize, but they are not so similar in appearance that they clash. Rather, by adding unique yet harmonizing textures of the same base element they enhance the depth, dimension, and interest of the room’s design.

Contrasting Connection

Like in love, sometimes opposites attract. And while using bold, contrasting colors may be intimidating, with stylistic guidance you can harness the aesthetic within your own home’s décor in a cohesive manner. Black and white is one contrasting aesthetic that when done properly is elegant and timeless. White tiled floors, for example, with white drapes from the Hunter Douglas Design Studio™ in a flowing sheer fabric have a fresh ethereal feeling. Or you can flip that and give the room a modern mid-century feel by pairing bold black window frames with checkerboard floors. In both cases those contrasting elements of the floors and window treatments (either textural and/or color based) are actually what connects the aesthetic.
